Martz and Quality Motorsports Open with Strong Showing in Dodge Showdown at Bullring

Last weekend’s Southern Nevada Dodge Dealers Dodge Showdown showcased the talent of the Quality Motorsports team owned by Jerry and Char Spilsbury. This year is the first year that Quality Motorsports has had all four of their cars on the track at the same time and Jerry Spilsbury was very happy with the performance of his team. “Our team had a great showing our first time out this season. We worked very hard to get all four cars ready to race and I can’t give our crew enough credit,” stated Spilsbury. All four of the Quality Motorsports cars qualified for the main event during the time trials turning in three of the five fastest times.

Rookie driver Justin Martz had a solid performance. In his first Super Late Model event at the Bullring, Martz qualified for the main event during time trials and finished in the lead among the rookies and in the middle of the pack overall. Following an early spin to avoid an on track altercation, Martz stormed through the field to run with the leaders for the rest of the race.

Quality Motorsports veteran Mike Cofer showed everyone how it was done by taking over the lead from his teammate Mike Ray when Ray was spun out after leading for the first quarter of the race. Cofer led the remainder of the race and was never really challenged by any of the other drivers. The win was especially exciting for Cofer who finished third in season points last year. “During practice last week we blew the engine on this car. We lost another engine during practice the day before the race so this car was really an unknown entity,” said Cofer who is driving the KB Home car again this year.

Mike Ray in the #18 car came back after being spun out and battled his way back to finish in a strong third position. The Quality Motorsports team will be back on the track at the Bullring when the regular season opens on April 17, 2004. In addition, Justin Martz will be driving his own #60 car for Martz Motorsports of Montana at the NASCAR Autozone Elite Division Southwest Series StarNursery.com 150 at Mesa Marin Raceway on March 28, 2004, in conjunction with the NASCAR Grand National West Series and the Speed Truck Challenge.
